Flying American and United 737 MAX - How Airlines Are Bringing the MAX Back?

I flew with United B737 MAX 9 and American B737 MAX 8 recently in the US on domestic flights. This video details the flying experiences of 737 MAX since grounding.

My United 737 MAX 9 flight was from Miami to Houston. The pilots talked about the cockpit of the 737 MAX, the MCAS and system in general. I reviewed the MAX passenger cabin and spoke about my thoughts on flying the 737 MAX.

My American 737 MAX 8 flight was a quick one from Orlando to Miami. I met up with aviation journalist Chris Sloan in Miami. He flew the first 737 MAX flight since grounding in the US on American B737 MAX 8 from Dallas to Tulsa. He visited American Airlines Maintenance and Engineering Center in Tulsa. Pilots of American talked about how they were trained to fly the MAX with the updated cockpit software and MCAS system. The engineers talked about how long it takes to update each MAX and re-activate the plane from grounding.

Chris also shared stories behind the scenes on how Boeing was rushed by customers to build the MAX instead of a clean sheet narrowbody airplane.

    I just flew on a max after flying the older 737 back to back. The max was noticeably quieter and the buffetting when flight attitude transitions seemed much more subdued and smooth. May sound strange but the flex in the wings seemed to help tremendously. I've got to think all the updated systems helped as well. For example the dual pronged wing tips. Nice to see such a simple fix. Where they can just turn off mcas if it's not working properly.

    I'll still be scared to ride this. and considering 777X had safety issues too, let's hope when it comes to commercial service it doesn't crash cause then the casualty would be equal to or slightly more than both the 737 Max that crashed. 1 777X crash=2 737 Max crash

    Voted thumbs down. Sam Chui, this is currently the safest aircraft to fly on. "The Max will have to prove itself over time" statement you made is true in the eyes of the public, but to the experts in aviation it now has the Gold medal of safety. I would actually be looking for airlines that had the MAX. You missed an opportunity to firm up confidence in Americas airline industry, with overwhelming evidence from all who you interviewed. Why?

    You need to STOP Promoting MAX aircraft I had flown it before the problem was detected and it's the worst aircraft ever. I would say sardine can is much better that this aircraft 👎. You can not get the families that lost their loved ones over Profits for Boeing company. Being an avid flyer as your self Mr.Chui I am quite disappointed but it's not your fault

    Seems a little unfair to criticize the second flight for no food or drink when it was only a 40 minute flight. Every American Airlines flight I have had in the past year(11) they passed out a bag with a snack, water and sanitizer. Wonder why you didn't receive one.

    I will never fly on 737 Max in my life, even if they fix the MCAS software, the engine is just too heavy for the plane, because they try to cut corner of using the same old 737 airplane frame, it’s just mind boggling, they could have make a whole new airplane instead of cutting corner of just putting new engine that are bigger than the previous one and try to counter that with an MCAS to stabilize it, you should make airplane that proportional so you don’t have to put software that can go wrong like MCAS, shame on them after 346 people died, when the former CEO said “We dont sale safety” and the messages of Boeing employees talking about not wanting to fly on 737 Max, I think it’s pretty clear that they care about money/profit than people life, they could have pulled out all of the 737 Max and refund all the airlines and start from scratch, but instead they letting these planes fly again, I rather fly airbus now, i don’t care if it’s not a US Company, because Safety Come first to me.

      I definitely get your safety culture concerns, but just want to give a technical note - there's nothing inherently wrong with the engine and the airframe. It's not "too heavy", and while its placement does cause problematic handling in certain flight regimes that's just the kind of compromise that makes airplanes challenging. Airbus and Boeing have both encountered similar issues (unexpected control problems due to a design decision) and have to make do with some reasonable solution. On any modern plane, software tends to do a very good job of that. But the shortcuts Boeing took in their original MCAS design were unacceptable

    Here is a list of things that went wrong with 737 max: 1. Engine position (more forward and elevated above the plane of the wing) that tends to cause the plane to pitch up into a stall. 2. Fixing a design flaw with software, MCAS 3. Sales race with Air BUS to market the plane as a perfect normal 737 replacement without need of training. 4. Shits that came from 3. Cheating and/or cheating with FAA to hide facts about mcas to make it fly similar to 737 and have it certified illegally (which they were never punished for). 5. (More of a cont. of 4) changed dual angle of attack sensor input to mcas to single sensor input. Why would they do this? Idk but that goes against all written or unwritten principles of redundancy in aircraft designs. 6. Lie and hide about 5 to FAA 7. Completely hide the existence of MCAS to all pilots and never even mentioned that on the pilot handbook or w.e it’s called. OH and FAA gave the green light. 8. None of the core problem is changed and it’s allowed to fight again while being called the safest plane in air. 9. More electrical problem detected. 10. **** boeing and the FAA They essentially only updated the software and put back the dual AOA sensor input. Would you prefer a necrotic and infected wound to be removed or just have a clean gauze patches over it and call it a day?

      Problem 1 and 2 are not problems. Using control law to alter flight characteristics for certification reasons is well established and has been done safely by both manufacturers. They also didn't ever have dual angle of attack sensor input: a large portion of 737 MAX's flight hardware had to be changed to meet the new requirement for redundancy following the two crashes and FAA review. They did not lie to FAA about that system design. They did present a justification for certain hazard ratings that was very questionable, and should have raised serious concerns both internally and with FAA review.

    The max was rushed to market due to competition from Airbus, which resulted in disasters, and American thinks that getting it back in the sky asap is going to build confidence?Pilots have said that they didn't feel the training with the new system every 3 years was enough and felt that every 2 years should be minimum. Personally I don't trust private companies when they say everything is fine, I wait for the FAA to ok it... but the problem is the FAA were also responsible with Boeing in the problematic rollout of the Max, so then who do you trust? Also, I'm not sure if the pilot at the beginning talking about his aging eyesight encourages confidence either.

    In the very beginning of the video the first officer is showing those switches. So apparently the system is still not 100% sure and they have to install this solution as a workaround. So thank you but no MAX for me!

    After all thats happened to the Max, I think that if the pilots and staff are happy to fly these planes now, Then we should be ok with them. The Max is now the most checked airplane out there now. So should be the safest. Lets just hope that there are no other issues, that are not related as it could be the death of that aircraft.     So basically they installed an on/off switch to shut down MCAS system if in the case it fails and starts sinking the plane... now the question will be how much time does the pilot has to disengage before the plane is in free fall ?

      Quite a lot more than that. The probability of an MCAS system operating incorrectly is drastically reduced because it compares readings from two sensors and does not activate if the readings differ significantly. Furthermore, even if they agree and are both incorrect, MCAS will command trim-down once (which pilots can correct for, and did in both incident flights) and then do nothing further until both sensors agree that the aircraft has returned below the activation threshold. Effectively, the probability of an incorrect MCAS activation in the first place is drastically reduced, and the risk of repeated MCAS activation under false data (which was what ultimately caused both crashes) was virtually eliminated.
